- Substantially revised the review to include a pros-and-cons summary, a more detailed breakdown of the bonus mechanics, and clarified the gold symbol transformation feature.
Pros
- Strong 96.92% RTP for medium volatility
- Gold tiles create useful Wilds during cascades
- Free spins begin with doubled multipliers
- Clear tile symbols remain readable during rapid cascades
Cons
- Far removed from classic three-reel mechanics
- Chinese commentary lacks an English language option
- Bonus value depends heavily on extended cascade sequences
Does Mahjong Ways respect the classics?
Mahjong Ways is a 2019 video slot from PG Soft, built on five reels, four rows and 1,024 ways to win. Matching tiles pay on three or more adjacent reels from the left. Its central feature is Cascading Reels, which removes winners, drops replacement symbols and raises a multiplier through repeated wins. That is efficient modern machinery, though hardly mechanical purity.
I want the purity of a clean three-reel grid, so twenty visible positions and 1,024 routes already test my patience. A proper fruit machine gives an immediate result: three cherries and done, that is how it should read. Here, one paid spin may continue through several drops. Still, the mechanic should speak for itself, and here it nearly does, because every cascade has an obvious cause.
Clarity saves the design from becoming a complete contraption. Tile values remain legible, the 5x4 layout does not change size, and wins follow a fixed left-to-right rule. Turbo mode and autoplay are conveniences rather than genuine mechanics. Yet the spoken Chinese commentary has no English option, and its repeated calls become intrusive during longer sessions. Silence is preferable once the rules are understood.
Reading the Mahjong tile paytable
Eight regular Mahjong tiles fill the reels, with the green character tile at the top of the paytable. It returns x0.75, x3 or x5 for three, four or five matching symbols. Successively lower tiles pay less, down to x0.1, x0.25 and x0.5. I prefer fruit, BAR and 7 because their hierarchy needs no study; the BAR symbol still deserves top billing.
Gold ingots are Wilds and substitute for regular paying tiles, but not the Scatter. More important are gold-plated versions of ordinary symbols on reels two, three and four. Whenever one contributes to a win, it changes into a Wild for the following cascade. That transformation can preserve a sequence, although the converted Wild disappears if it joins the next winning combination.
Specific paytable criticism is due. Several lower tiles differ mainly through dots or bamboo counts, so rapid cascades make their values less immediately distinct than cherries, plums and oranges. No needless frills stacked onto the paytable would be my preference. Mahjong Ways avoids card ranks and character symbols, but eight tile designs still demand more visual checking than a classic reel strip ever should.

How cascades and free spins work
Winning combinations disappear after payment, then existing tiles fall and new ones enter from above. The base-game multiplier begins at x1, then advances through x2, x3 and x5 across consecutive winning cascades. Once x5 is reached, further wins in that same sequence retain it. A non-winning drop ends the sequence, and the next paid spin resets the multiplier to x1.
Landing three Scatters during one spin or its continuing cascade sequence triggers 12 Free Spins. Every additional triggering Scatter adds two more spins. During the feature, multiplier levels double to x2, x4, x6 and x10. Each free spin begins at x2, while sustained cascades can reach x10 and remain there until that sequence produces no further win.
Retriggers add further free spins, so the bonus has room to continue without a stated retrigger cap. No Bonus Buy or ante bet bypasses the natural trigger. Good. At least the player must land the required symbols. Still, too many features here betray the classic spirit: cascades, transforming gold tiles, four multiplier stages and retriggers all sit between the stake and the final result.
Probability remains medium rather than gentle. The overall hit rate is about one win per 3.5 spins, while the feature arrives roughly once per 204 spins. RTP is 96.92%, which is stronger than the 96.0% I would call respectable for a stripped-back build. A reported 25,000x ceiling is substantial, but the bonus needs long cascade chains before its highest multiplier matters.
