Sound design at ReelPlay, examined

Infinity Reels gives ReelPlay's sound designers a natural rising structure to work with, and they use it well. Each added reel lifts the multiplier, and the audio climbs with it. I find the ascending pitch cues genuinely satisfying, a recognisable melodic signature that maps directly onto the mechanic. The reveal sounds are detailed and considered.

The audio identity of the catalogue

These three sit at opposite tonal ends, and to my eye the studio nails the brief on each rather than recycling one loop.

Older titles are less polished. Bounty Hunt and Buster Hammer date back to the early catalogue, and their samples feel thinner. Even so, the stereo placement stays convincing, and the free spins fanfare on Canyon Cash lands cleanly. The mastering is well-balanced overall, if a touch quieter than modern releases.

Where the mix stumbles

Not every title holds up under repeat listening. In Gems Infinity Reels, the multiple stacked grids create a busier soundscape, and I noticed abrupt audio transitions at times when new panels unlock during free spins. The credit-collect chime is a music loop that wears thin quickly once the session runs long. It is a small flaw, but a real one.

The re-release problem

ReelPlay's recent trend worries me more than any single mix. Rather than fresh concepts, the studio has leaned into re-skins of existing games with borrowed mechanics like Dream Drop, Big Bang, 10K Ways and GigaBlox. The audio in Money Mariachi Infinity Reels and its sequel Money Mariachi Fiesta Infinity Reels stays strong, but I hear the same melodic ideas recur. Credible samples free of cliche keep it listenable, yet the creative spark feels stretched thinner each year.
